Sections of concrete park paths have been designated for replacement at O'Kane Park, 7101 W. First Ave., and Belmar Park, 801 S. Wadsworth Blvd between January and July 2018. Work has been completed already at O'Kane park and the paths are now open for public use. Signs showing work areas and estimated timelines are posted at the major park entrances.
We are focusing on the beautification of select medians on major roadways in the City. Medians were selected for renovation based on the quality and appearance of the existing plant material and the deterioration of the irrigation system. The medians have been designed over the past year and landscaping work is now in progress.
Medians included in this renovation are as follows:
Work estimated to conclude in mid-November with additional planting occurring in Spring, 2018 due to plant availability.
We have completed construction of a concrete, accessible trail link between Sutherland Shire Park to Main Reservoir. This shared-use path completes a scenic off-street, paved route from W. Florida Ave to W. Kentucky Dr. and improves access to the new playground at Sutherland Shire Park.
This connection was promoted by a Neighborhood Participation Grant submission and the gracious permission of the landowners: the State Land Board and the Agricultural Ditch and Reservoir Company.

The rehabilitation of the
exterior of the Caretaker’s Cottage located on the grounds of the Lakewood
Heritage Center is underway and the first phase is now complete. The first phase addressed foundation and structural repairs including roofing, siding, site work, exterior paint and some interior drywall. Residents will now notice a refreshed exterior view and new landscaping. Future phases will address the interior rehabilitation and access. This project is paid for in part by a History Colorado State Historical Fund Grant.
Located in O’Kane Park7101 W. 1st
In 2015, the community came together to discuss the
future reuse of the O’Kane house and auxiliary structures. Feedback confirms
there is wide community support for officially designating the property as an
historic site, which would make it eligible for some funding to support
eventual rehabilitation provided an appropriate reuse is identified.
Neighborhood feedback confirmed support for utilizing the site for non-profit
office space and/or event use such as weddings and other celebrations and
community gatherings. The City will pursue local historic designation for the
site. Following a successful designation process, the City will then proceed
to prioritize rehabilitation of the house among other projects for
application to the State Historical Fund. As we currently have other
projects in the pipeline that are under contract and will require
additional phases, we expect to be in a position to consider an application
for the O’Kane property in the next five to ten years.
