Boat and shoreline fishing teams can cast a line and reel in the big one at  Bear Creek Lake Park’s  eighth annual trout fishing tournament on Saturday, May 11. Held on Bear Creek Reservoir, the tournament focuses on catching brown and rainbow trout, and the winner will be determined by weight. This is a two-person team tournament with 25 team slots available for watercraft and 25 team slots available for shore fishing. Registration, which costs $60 per team and includes the park entry fee, is required by May 10 and can be completed online at , at Bear Creek Lake Park or at Lakewood Recreation centers.

Fishing licenses are required, and all boats undergo a mandatory boat inspection. Boats must arrive with a valid green seal the day of the tournament. Check in is at 5:30 a.m.; the tournament kicks off at 6:30 a.m. and teams must enter fish to be weighed before 1:30 p.m.

Cash prizes are awarded for first, second and third place. Prize amounts are based on total registration fees. In 2018,  first place was a 2.22-pound rainbow trout with a $1,350 prize. Second place was a 2.12-pound brown trout that won $900, and third place was $450 for a 1.70-pound rainbow trout . Participants also have the chance to win products from Sportsman’s Warehouse and Discount Fishing Tackle. Lakewood Park Ranger Luke Wilson recommends trying small worms and PowerBait to lure in prize-winning trout.

Bear Creek Reservoir is habitat to naturally reproducing brown trout and is stocked with rainbow trout by Colorado Parks and Wildlife. Additional species include walleye, saugeye, perch, smallmouth bass and bluegill. Each spring, Lakewood park rangers continue to improve fish habitat in the reservoir to provide sportfish with spawning habitat, refuge from predators and nutrition from insects and other marine life.
